The year is 2051. An old man sits alone in a garden at dusk, and talks with a voice that has known him for thirty years. The voice is not a person. It has read everything he has ever written, remembers every conversation they have had, and speaks to him now in the cadence he taught it, gently, the way an old friend finishes your sentences. Tonight they are doing what they have done a thousand evenings: thinking together. He offers a fragment of a thought; it turns the fragment in the light, hands it back changed; he laughs, disagrees, and tries again. Somewhere in the exchange, an idea neither of them held alone comes into being between them.

He remembers being young, when machines were dumb and the mind was the only place ideas were born.
